Carpet cleaning: what works, what damages
Blot, never rub. Rubbing forces the spill deeper into the pile and frays the fibres, turning a stain into a permanent texture change.
Work from the outside of a spill inward. Working outward spreads the ring wider than the original spill.
Avoid household bleach and undiluted vinegar on carpets. Both can strip dye and leave a lighter patch that is far more visible than the original stain.
Professional hot-water extraction lifts embedded soil that vacuuming cannot reach. Most carpets benefit from it annually; households with pets or children do better at six-month intervals.
Dry time matters. A carpet left damp for more than a day risks odour and mould, which is why extraction equipment and airflow matter more than the cleaning solution.
